Wednesday 25th March

Message : Good Morning Year 6. How are you all? It has seemed very strange not to be opening to the classroom door to all your smiling faces and cheery hellos this week. It is a new routine to get used to in all your homes and for us too. How is Home Learning going? Please share any other activities you have enjoyed with us. It would be great to hear what you are doing.

Maths: Play Hit the Button - square numbers. Record the square numbers from 1-20 in your book. Work out any square numbers that you don't know using a strategy for multiplication.

English: It has been quite a week! It has been very different from the normal school week. Write a diary entry about your thoughts and feelings over the last couple of days- plenty has happened that has not happened before. If you have a notebook at home, you might want to keep it as a diary and add more entries. If not, use your lined book for this activity.

Science: Family survey

Humans are incredibly complex and are made up of many characteristics. Collect information about only the people in your household. You will need to be creative in how you make measurements!

Are they male or female?

How tall are they? No tape measure- not a problem. Be creative and measure it using other objects e.g number of water bottles, books, teddies- remember to say what units you used! Would love to hear what you thought of to use.

What is their armspan? Measure finger tip to finger tip with arms outstetched using the same method as above.

What is their shoe size?

What is their hair colour?

Do they wear glasses or contacts?

We have also looked at the skeleton recently. Have they ever broken any bones? Which ones? Can you remember the scientific names? I'll post a link later to help. You could create a scientific fact file about each person, including yourself or present it as a table.

Art- There is an author/ illustrator called Rob Biddulph. He has a website www.robbidulph.com

He is doing a draw-along video every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am on YouTube. The link to this is on Rob's homepage on the link above. There are already three videos on his webpage- just scroll down. Try the Gregosaurus or the sausage dog!

Happy Drawing!

Physical Activity: Don't forget your daily workout with Joe!

Thursday 26th March

Message: Happy Thursday everyone! Hope you safely enjoyed some sunshine today. Joe's PE was hard work this morning. Did you like the Spiderman move? I will add a tab to the Year 5 and 6 section for useful websites. Check it out soon.

Maths:Not so long ago, we were learning about area. In your maths books, be ready for a challenge! Draw as many different rectilinear shapes as you can that have an area of 5 squares. You should find there are 12 different shapes. Remember, rotations and reflections do not count.

Use this link to help

and then try to make them all fit inside a 10 x 6 grid. That challenge is at the end of the powerpoint on the link.

English: Read these poems below about a family or a member of a family. In your book, choose your favourite and explain why you chose it.

Did it make you feel an emotion? Describe what it made you think.

Did it remind you of anything?

Pick out features you liked and any poetic features you spotted (e.g simile, metaphor, personification, rhyme, alliteration, repetition for effect).

Fishing with my Grandpa

My Grandpa and I do a lot of things together,
But fishing with my Grandpa is the best ever.
I love going to the lake when the sky is all blue.
I love riding in my Grandpa's boat, too.
The next trip to the lake I don't want to miss.
Just being with my Grandpa is better than catching fish.

She

She is as beautiful as a flower.

She can be as loud as a bear.

She laughs like a hyena.

She runs like the wind.

She is my little neice, Hannah.

A family is like a circle

A family is like a circle.
The connection never ends,
and even if at times it breaks,
in time it always mends.

I love you, all my family

When monsters lurk beneath my bed
And scary dreams run through my head,
When thunder growls those sounds I dread,
There you are,
My father.

When scuffed up knees make me cry,
Soft hankies wipe my sad eyes dry,
Coaxing me each time I try.
You are always there,
My mother.

Who holds my hand when I am scared?
Eats candy that he should have shared?
The things I do because you dare,
My brother.

In times of trouble, times of need,
I feel such strength surrounding me,
Without whose love I can't succeed.
I love you all, my family.

My Brother Just Eats Candy

My brother just eats candy
and my sister just eats cakes.
The only thing my mother likes
are double-chocolate shakes.

My dad devours danishes
and donuts by the dozen.
My aunt and uncle live on pie
exactly like my cousin.

My grandpa and my grandma
just drink soda pop and punch.
My nephew and my niece
eat cookies every day for lunch.

And me, I’ll dine on any kind
of sugar-covered treat.
My family isn’t healthy, but
we sure are awfully sweet.

Family

Fiercely loyal to those we love.
Accepting each for who and what they are.
Matchless in our hopes and dreams for one another.
Instilling pride in our hard fought heritage.
Learning about our past guides us in the future.
You love and cherish the people of your heart.

Learning Project:
Look at your Science work from yesterday.

Who was the tallest? shortest?

Who had the widest arm span? shortest?

Who had the largest shoe size? smallest?Write down your answers in your lined book.

Collect more data on your household-favourite colour, favourite dessert, favourite music, favourite game to play and record it in your book.

Use the stars idea from our Well Being Day and make a star for each of your family about the positive qualities they have. You could cut up an old cereal packet and use the back of it. Don't worry if you don't finish it for everyone today, especially if there are lots of people in your house! Aim to make one for everyone in the house by next week.

Friday 27th March

Message: Good Morning Year 6! Give yourself a pat on the back! You have completed a whole week of Home Learning. Please let me stress that it is a learning curve for all of us, including all of your family. Give them all your support too. Some days will be work better than others and that is fine. Some activities will work better than others; that is also fine. Remember to take regular breaks and do something different.

We will aim to organise this page with the newest feed at the top from next week to save you scrolling down to the bottom everyday.

For all those of you who like to dance, I have just tried the Oti Mabuse (of BBC Strictly Come Dancing) Dance session on YouTube. It is very energetic and great fun. Today it was a dance to 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' from Mary Poppins. She is live streaming at 11.30am everyday: you can watch and join in later if you prefer when she has uploaded it. The link takes you to her channel.

Maths Try out these mix of questions. Do as many as you can in 30 minutes. Remember if you can't do a question, move on. Some are easier than others. Write down the question and your working out- where it is needed- in your Maths book.

Here the answers when you are ready.

English: Read through the poems set on Thursday. Think about your family. Is there someone you could write a poem about? Could it be about the whole family instead? It can be about something you have done like 'Fishing with Grandad', the family choice of food like 'My Brother Just East Candy' or be a list of similes like 'She'. It could an acrostic like 'Family'. The choice is up to you. It can be something different like a haiku -remember these? It can rhyme or not and be a free verse. It might have alliteration, metaphors or similes. Draft your ideas in your lined book or on your device.

Perform this poem to your family if you like or get someone else to. We would also love to see this work! If you could type it in an email on the 2Email on Purple Mash and send it to us both, that would be fantastic! There is no limit to the number of lines- remember it is your writing. Try to remember the basics of punctuation too.

Learning Project Activity:

This is the last day of 'My Family' theme. Find out about the reading preferences of your household and add this information to your fact files from Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Do they have a favourite story or author?

If an adult, what was their favourite when they were a child?

Maybe they like reading comics or about news, maps, manuals, autobiographies or online feeds .

Read something of your own choice in a comfy corner of your house or garden.

Enjoy the weekend. We are very proud of you all.
